Inititally, when picking out books in the library, someone said
'I bet we have to judge a book by its cover or something'
And we did. I thought I had picked books which sounded interesting to me, which I could actually generate ideas from, but honestly they couldn't have been more boring books on topics I knew bloody nothing about.
So I settled for 'the seven deadly sins- christian, jewish and human reflections on human nature'
Yikes.
Okay so the original challenge was coming up with ideas for the five roughs. I stupidly left it 'til the night before because I was putting it off too much, and ended up coming up with three ideas that I kinda felt ashamed to show to the group crit.
Thankfully the group was lovely and really encouraging about my work and gave me some great tips and pointers, but I still felt, looking around the class, that I should step up my game a little bit.
Again, I left it 'til the night before to produce the book cover I finally made, and to be honest, it was quite rushed. I did enjoy the concept of it though, and feel that I should have executed the whole thing better than I did.
My design was this hairy monster painted with a human hand holding a mirror. Although its a simple concept, I definitely could have done it neater, more accurate and perhaps less childish when facing such a serious concept. Also, I produced it as more of an image as a whole instead of as a functional book cover- I was more focused on how it looked as a spread instead of folded around a book on a shelf. so I don't think i made it too visually appealing to be honest, which is something i definitely intend to work on.
I'd honestly like to say that I have learned my lesson about leaving all my work til last minute, but, realistically, its not the first or last time it's gong to happen. But ill give it a damn good try.
