SB1 Playbook 2

I have found playbook to be interesting this term, yet the structure has thrown me a little bit- instead of having a short turnaround for sketchbook work, the sessions have been less frequent seminars and the sketchbook work set to be done in our own time- something i wasn't necessarily expecting but have enjoyed all the same, it is more engaging and interesting to have discussions and a lot of time to play outside of all that too.

the three elements task

Ok so it actually was exciting learning about the rights (and even better the wrongs) of composition and how to use that to your advantage- its something i have never really studied or played around with and have always just done things without really considering the message its going to give off or the impact its going to have. So when it came to creating the painting with three elements, it was fun to play around with size and composition.
i am pleased with my final outcome, however as i did the head really tiny (and it happened to be near the horizon) it made the body look skewed and out of proportion, like a man leaning back over hills for a few miles (more unrealistic expectations for men, i know) and not in the foreground of the painting like it was supposed to, it looked silly and more far away. Maybe i should have chosen a different composition, or just changed it up to be less darn confusing. Silly me.

the elephant, the butterfly and me

i feel like for me, the most unmotivsated person i know, i really went to town in this session- i got a taste for playing around with the inks and experimenting while creating work instead of just sketching it out in the book and coming to one final conclusion.
some of the compositions i did were a little less effective than others but i still had fun not only plating with composition but also working with ink- it's sadly been a while for me (note to self- remedy this u silly boi)

that's so deeeep man

stupidly, i didn't realise the screenprint task was meant to cover depth as i didnt associate them to be connected, though it does make perfect sense.
So the brief for designing something we would liketo have up in our house was a little to broad for me and i struggled to know where to start- i considered working out a way to show a barbers shop form the top left corner of the room, but i left myself too little time to plan this out correctly and design it so i would be happy with it. i also forgot to play with the stock and the mixxed colour effects and i ended up turning back into old sketchbooks to find work i enjoyed making and taking inspirtation from that. i ended up recreating and altering an image that i had already sketched out a while back.

the actual screenprinting process i found to be stressful. the screen kept drying up as i kept forgetting to flood it so most of my designs ended up unaligned and the details didn't show up ( i hadn't pressed hard enough with the china (chyna? chiner?) marker. It is definitely a process i'd love to use again (and will!) in the future, but am not sure i'd feel confident enough going at it alone. Yet. A lil bit of practice is all i need.

i feel like i not only know more about composition, depth, colour use and intention from these sessions, i will definitely be putting a lot more consideration in to my work and will try to retain my happy go lucky outlook and actually try and make my work more visually decent. well- work i feel proud of. oh, and listen to the dam instructions too.
